Below
is a list of trading guidelines. Most are common sense, but those are
the ones most easily forgotten! |
Guidelines
- High post count does not automatically mean good trader or board member.
- Always verify exactly what you are trading. Don't be afraid to ask for scans.
- Always verify shipping methods. If you are shipping in a manner that provides a tracking number (registered mail, delivery confirmation, etc), by all means provide that to the trader.
- Always verify when you are shipping.
- If it is a big money deal, use a shipping method that includes some sort of tracking.
- If you are a new member or do not have many references (especially in a mid- or high-end trade), you may be asked to send first. It's not a sign of disrespect, but is commonplace for newer members. If you have references please do share, even if they are eBay dealings.
- A variation of the above--when in doubt, ask for references.
- For big money trades, don't be afraid to ask for a phone number. Phone numbers may also be required for some shipping methods (at least in the US).
- If you email a member about some cards, use good judgement--if you are from
a particular site then mention that and provide
your username. There is a good chance
that
the
potential trader you are contacting gets emails from people other than yourself,
so say something more useful than "I'm interested in that McCarty auto."
- Shipping times vary seemingly from day to day, especially in cross-border
mailings. I've had something go from North Carolina to Toronto in 7 days
on one occasion, then 24 days on another. As another example, I received
something faster from Sweden than from Sudbury. Factor in mail holidays
and especially the
time of the year. Chances are it will take longer in mid-December than
in mid-June. Blame that on Christmas cards, not hockey cards.
- Be careful not to point the "thieving trader" finger too soon. See notes
above on shipping delays. Be patient. While there are some bad people
out there, generally if you do your homework things should go smoothly.
Beckett provides
a Trader
Info board, and Hobby Insider has a feedback system. Don't be afraid to ask the other trader's references for any information if necessary.
- This is a hobby. Have fun and be respectful of people. This is a world-wide group and there are people here from all over the globe. People speak different languages, collect different players, and have different collecting habits. Some hate the Rangers, some don't like particular card companies. If we all collected the same thing, it wouldn't be a fun hobby!
